Star Trails in Australia

Many photographers like to experiment with long exposure photography techniques, but an Australian Lincoln Harrison gives a new definition to the word “long”. The 37-year-old Victorian showcases a portfolio of mesmerizing long exposure star trail photography, with some of his photo shoots taking up to 15 hours. The photos are made at his personal favorite spot over Lake Eppalock, in the Australian outback.

The star swirls are the result of the rotation of the Earth, and makes you think you’re witnessing the stars traveling across the sky. “With no buildings for miles, the sky is so clear and it’s amazing to be able to capture the beauty of the night’s sky on camera,” says Lincoln.

John Stewart Lives!:

Man, that was quick. Good job, Internet! On the one hand, I’m glad DC came to their senses, but as Rich points out, this extremely fast changing of direction is part of the problem… but oh well! In this case it turned out well. I wonder if Fialkov could be persuaded to return, now. I though this Noir detective GL sounded interesting.

Marcurio is definitely my favorite. He kicks ass and I like his snark. Totally married him, and take him everywhere.

The victim-blaming, slut-shaming reactions to the Steubenville rape case keep pouring in. You can check out my first post on it here. Pointing out the worst responses and reactions to this all would not be complete without posting a clip of CNN grieving over the “ruined lives of the boys.” Watch…

Holy shit. WTF is WRONG with these people?! I feel uncomfortable knowing i share the same planet as them.

lokiallthefucksigive: April’s Wraparound Covers for Batman #19,...

lokiallthefucksigive:

April’s Wraparound Covers for Batman #19, Batwing #19, Detective Comics #19, Stormwatch #19, Suicide Squad #19, Dial H #11, and Earth 2 #11

Dial H’s is especially interesting, given the revelations from the #0 issue, and I got my hopes up that that was Hush on the cover of Suicide Squad.

Also hello New Gods in Earth 2.

I never saw what the complaints were about for the gatefold cover month, I think they’re fun.

Dial H looks like it will probably be a lot of fun! Batman has me intrigued… not just because it’s Jim Gordon, but because Bruce is holding a gun. he’s so anti-gun that it’s just really bizarre, no matter who is on the other side of the cover. New gods in Earth 2 should be interesting! But the one that’s got me most excited is Stormwatch, because I’m an Authority fan who hated the new Stormwatch. Good riddance, I say, and bring on the re-rebooted team! the others… i haven’t been following, so… Wait, is this issue of Detective what would have been issue 900 if the universe hadn’t been rebooted? that’s kinda cool.

ps. I wish they’d show the full cover to All-Star Western. come on, we all know it’s Booster Gold on the other side of the cover!

ComicVine Exclusive Cover Reveal: STORMWATCH #19 - Stormwatch is Dead!

White hair and halo on Apollo! That other cover with blond hair must have been a coloring error, so I’m happy! :D still wary of new Jenny, (I don’t like that she’s been whitewashed, don’t like that she has a costume rather than just street clothes, etc.) but I am thrilled to have Apollo and Midnighter back to their old selves. And look! classic Wildstorm logo!

The thing is, the Nords attacked the snow elves because they “Sacked” Saarthal. If the Nords went unprovoked, the two races could have shared the land peacefully, and the snow elves would still be around.

You really think genocide is an appropriate response for sacking one city? A city founded in the Snow Elves native lands, no less. The Snow Elves were already present in Skyrim when the Nords came and started settling in their land. So maybe the Nords shouldn’t have provoked the Snow Elves by settling in their territory in the first place. :p

But why would the Snow Elves need to destroy the city? How is moving to a new land Provoking them? Granted, the modern day Nords are kind of acting territorial as well, but that’s because the Thalmor are outlawing the worship of a god and destroying their ancient culture. As far as we know, the Nords did nothing else other than settle in Skyrim. We don’t know if they did something to ruin the Snow Elf culture. So we appear to be at a stalemate. Now I’m off to read up on the Night of Tears.

What countries do you know of that have ever been ok with just anyone settling inside their territory without so much as asking? There are immigration laws and regulations for a reason. Not wanting foreigners to settle in the lands they’ve called home for generations is not unreasonable, particularly for this setting, and the Nords should have respected that. And while the Snow Elves are not blameless, it’s very much a shades of gray situation, having a city sacked doesn’t mean you get to attempt to wipe an entire people from the face of the planet in response. Even after the elves were beaten and in retreat, the Nords still kept after them, intent on wiping them out, forcing the elves into a very unsavory deal with the Dwemer, who finished the job. (well, with a couple exceptions who managed to escape)

???

There are no icons at all in Skyrim.

I was also confused by this one. Maybe they’re using a modded interface and they’ve had it for so long they forgot it was a mod?

Yeah, sounds like they’re using Sky UI, it adds color coded potion icons (and other icons, for armor, books, etc.). Which is very nice, and yeah it kinda sucks made potions (unless they are single effect, I think) don’t get the colors, but I am not really sure how you’d implement it either, since you can have potions with several wildly different effects all in one if you make them yourself.

sciencesoup:

Badass Scientist of the Week: Ada Lovelace

Ada Lovelace, born Augusta Ada Byron (1815–1852), was a mathematician who is widely considered the founder of scientific computing. She was the daughter of Romantic poet Lord Byron and mathematician Anne Milbanke, whose brief marriage ended just a month after Ada was born—she never knew her father. Ada was raised by her mother, who encouraged her interest in mathematics and science, partly to prevent her from becoming a delinquent poet like her father. When she was seventeen, Ada met Charles Babbage, professor of mathematics at Cambridge and inventor of the Difference Engine, the first calculating machine. They began correspondences about mathematics, logic, and all manner of subjects. Two years later, Ada married William King and had three children, and became a Countess of Loveless when William inherited a noble title. In 1834, Babbage made plans for a new kind of calculating machine called an Analytical Engine, and in 1842, Italian mathematician Louis Menabrea published an article on the machine in French. Babbage enlisted Ada to translate it, a task she threw herself into with fervour—she translated the article over a nine-month period in 1842–43, adding extensive, enlightened notes of her own, which are the source of her enduring fame. Her notes show she understood the device’s potential better than Babbage, as they contained incredible visionary statements—she predicted, for example, that the Engine might act upon things other than numbers, such as composing elaborate scientific pieces of music. The idea that a machine could manipulate symbols according to laws, and that numbers could be used to represent things other than just quantities, marks the transition from calculation to computation. Ada took this mental leap, and she has been referred to as the ‘prophet of the computer age’ and an ‘Enchantress of Numbers’. She died young, cancer taking her at just 37, but her achievements as a mathematician and a woman live on in her legacy. In 1980, in honour of her contributions to computer science, the U.S. Department of Defence named its computer language ‘Ada.’

Britain’s ‘Atheist Church’ Set to Go Global

Echoing with joyful song and with a congregation bent on leading better lives, this London church is like any other — except there’s no mention of God.

I’ve often pondered this. As a kid, I went to church. I hated the “worship” part, but really enjoyed the socializing. As an atheist adult, I’ve wondered about the appeal of an “atheist church” — it sounds more like a social club for non-believers and, possibly, a pretty good idea. Thoughts? ~Ian

The idea of a weekly social club isn’t anything i have a problem with, but I’d have a bit of a problem with it being called a ‘church’. Many believers like to claim atheism is a religion, when it’s not, and the use of the word church would just confuse things further…

The individual raw black and white Hubble images are opened and scaled.

Images are aligned in a graphics editing program.

The camera that took this image is made of two light detectorsm separated by a gap. The gaps are filled with data from another camera.

Each image is assigned a color. Combined, they create a full color image.

Cosmetic defects, including bad pixels, cosmic rays and the detector gap, are cleaned.

The color composite is rotated and cropped.

Images must be woven together from the incoming data from the cameras, cleaned up and given colors that bring out features that eyes would otherwise miss. In this video from HubbleSite, a Hubble-imaged galaxy comes together on the screen.
